Ligurian olive growing: an ancient activity

A job that has had the opportunity to develop and specialize over the past three centuries, paying untold efforts.
If Taggiasca olive oil is famous all over the world, much of the credit is due to its exceptional quality, but also to the merchants of this province who over the centuries have plowed any road, by land or sea, to make it known and appreciated.
So in summary, there are three factors that have led the Taggiasca olive to be one of the undisputed queens of world olive growing.

An important agricultural tradition

It is this tradition that has decided in recent centuries to focus on olive monoculture to the detriment of other species such as the vine, chestnut and fig, in an impervious and tiring territorial reality that has tempered the character of the Ligurians, “adsueto malo ligurem ”(people accustomed to fatigue) as Virgil defined it in the Georgics.

This radical transformation has profoundly affected the landscape and orography of Liguria.

A strong commercial tradition of Liguria

Let’s not forget the medieval motto “Genuensis ergo mercator” (Genoese, therefore merchant), which has ensured that Taggiasca olives and Taggiasco oil were known in the most disparate territories of the planet, while maintaining their typicality and their characteristics that have distinguished for centuries, in Liguria, precisely in the province of Imperia.
